Roots & Resilience – Culture and Climate Clubs Reviving Hope

At a primary school in Moyale, the dusty, treeless compound once offered little protection from the blazing sun. Classes were often interrupted because children struggled to focus under such harsh conditions. Teachers worried that the environment discouraged attendance and learning.

In response, IDNK partnered with the school to establish Culture & Climate Clubs—student-led groups that blend environmental stewardship with cultural preservation. Children were introduced to tree planting, indigenous knowledge about dryland survival, and storytelling traditions passed down from elders.

Within a year, the school had planted more than 200 trees, transforming its compound into a budding green space. Pupils now enjoy shade during outdoor lessons, and some trees have started producing fruit that supplements their meals. Beyond the trees, the club also revived traditional songs, dances, and language practices that were at risk of being forgotten.

Thirteen-year-old Abdi, a member of the club, explains: “We sing in our mother tongue, plant trees, and learn about how our elders used to predict rain. These trees remind us of our roots and give us hope for our future.”

Teachers have observed improved student attendance and participation, as children feel proud of their role in shaping their school’s environment. Parents, too, have become more involved, contributing seedlings and encouraging the children.

What started as a small project is now a movement that ties together culture, environment, and education. Through Culture & Climate Clubs, IDNK is nurturing a generation of young leaders who value both their heritage and their environment.
